James Madison Papers

The Papers of James Madison Digital Edition join the available resources on the Rotunda platform.  Other titles include the papers of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Dolley Madison.
The Papers of James Madison documents the life and work of one of the most important political and constitutional thinkers in our nation’s history. As chief author of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, secretary of state during the Louisiana Purchase, and the fourth president of the United States, Madison played a central role in the American founding and the growth of the early Republic. 
The intital release is an in-progress version of our Papers of James Madison Digital Edition, consisting of all 17 volumes of the Congressional Series, covering Madison’s life and career through March 1801. We expect completion of the digital edition by early July. It will contain online versions of all volumes in the letterpress edition that have been published through 2009:

  2. Secretary of State Series, 8 volumes (1801–1805)
  3. Presidential Series, 6 volumes (1809–1813)
  4. Retirement Series, 1 volume (1817–1820)
