Dr. Hilary Hughes, an information science researcher on the faculty of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia, will visit Colgate while in the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship. Dr. Hughes has published numerous articles on the information literacy and learning of international students.  She has also received awards for her teaching in the Masters of Education program at QUT.  Her Fulbright funded project, involving three institutions of higher education in Denver, Co, aims to improve international and traditionally underserved students’ abilities to critically use information and develop familiarity with academic practices.  More information is available at http://www.fulbright.com.au/scholars/australian-scholars/2010/Hughes.html

On Tuesday, Nov. 2, Dr. Hughes will give a talk titled, Information Literacy as Social and Educational Capital, which illustrates how information literacy is a force for social and economic well-being and supports the human right to information (in all its forms). During her visit, she will also meet with student and faculty groups while on campus, and conduct a workshop for Colgate librarians called the Six Frames of Information Literacy, which focuses on different ways of thinking about information literacy in relationship to teaching, learning, and assessment.
