Today we celebrate the birthdate of famed Scottish poet Robert Burns who was born in Ayrshire in 1759. Perhaps you know the words to "Cotter's Saturday Night", "Scots, Wha Hae", "Auld Lang Syne", or "To A Mouse"? For more information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
"Wee, sleekit, cow'rin', tim'rous beastie,
O what a panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi' bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee,

The Center for Research Libraries will purchase ten valuable microform and reprint collections through this year’s Purchase Proposal with a list price value of $339,469. These sets will soon be available through interlibrary loan from CRL. Many major microform and reprint sets and collections can be too costly for individual institutions, and are not readily available through interlibrary loan. Through the CRL Purchase Proposal Program, libraries nominate microform and hard copy collections for CRL purchase. Participation in this cooperative purchase program is one of the benefits of a CRL membership.
Back in the spring of 2009, the Libraries partnered with faculty to identify low use or high cost-per-use journals which might need to be canceled to balance our budget. Thank you for your support in that endeavor. Since then, the Colgate Libraries have experienced three years of flat or declining materials budgets despite periodical inflation that has hovered around 6% annually. Serials expenditures currently consume 70% of the materials budget; last year we spent $1,495,891 on serials (excluding pay-per-view access). Maintenance of last year’s subscriptions would cost us an additional $89,753. In order to balance the FY2012 budget we had to cancel additional journals identified by faculty as lower priority in spring 2009 . Each year we have cancelled journals from this pool focusing on the highest cost-per-use titles first. We have been careful to check use statistics each year to verify that titles in this pool continue to demonstrate patterns of low use, or high cost-per-use. This is the third year of the cancellation project and we hope that we will not have to cancel any other titles in FY2013.

During this scheduled maintenance, users will be able to search, browse, and access and download PDF files for content in JSTOR. They will not be able to save citations, reset passwords, create or update MyJSTOR accounts, or purchase articles."
Stella Yoh, Class of 2014 has curated a wonderful exhibit of the African photography of Peter Stanley. To quote from her introduction: "Hapa na Pale (“here and there” in Swahili) is an exhibition aimed at challenging the preconceived notions of “Africa,” by focusing on one African country, Tanzania, and honestly reflecting the authentic daily lives of the people. Captured in photos by freelance photographer Peter Stanley, the exhibition delivers a non-distorted version of Tanzania. The photos can be divided into mainly 4 categories: the urban scenes of the capital city Dar es Salaam; the rural scenes of Inner Tanzania; photos of the Masaai tribe; and photos of the Island of Zanzibar." The exhibit can be viewed on the fifth floor of Case Geyer. While you are here check out the exquisite display of John Gould's images of hummingbirds from around the world. That exhibit is on the second floor of Case Geyer.
Our serials vendor Ebsco is experiencing problems with our 2011 renewals due to technical difficulties on their end and extreme weather conditions. We are working hard to ensure continuity in subscriptions, but there may be issues. If Journal Finder indicates that we have ongoing access and you cannot access a recent issue it may be that the subscription has inadvertently lapsed. In that case please contact a librarian with the details of the article you are trying to access. We will do all that we can to get you access to a recent article as fast as possible both acquiring the article through Interlibrary Loan and also seeking to get access restored. We hope the situation will be remedied within the next two weeks.
